Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is osteopathy and how does it work?
Osteopathy is a hands-on manual therapy that addresses structural imbalances in the body to restore motion and reduce pain. Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, we look at how the whole body is moving and compensating, because the painful area is often not where the problem started.
We cover more details regarding What is Osteopathy as well as Our Approach at JD Osteopathy.
What’s the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy?
Osteopathy emphasizes a whole-body approach, assessing how all systems, joints, muscles, fascia, and the nervous system, connect and influence each other. Treatment is hands-on throughout the session.
Physiotherapy tends to focus more on specific areas impacted by injury or illness, and often involves a larger exercise and home program component alongside hands-on work.
Both have their place. For a fuller comparison, read how to choose between osteopathy, physiotherapy, and chiropractic.
What should I expect at my first osteopathy appointment in Mississauga?
Your first appointment (45 minutes for adults) begins with a thorough health history. We want to understand not just your current complaint, but your broader health background, past injuries, and lifestyle. From there, we do a full-body postural and movement assessment before any hands-on treatment begins.
Most patients receive treatment in their first session. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and socks, and avoid jeans or restrictive clothes so we can assess and treat effectively. If you have any relevant imaging like an MRI or X-ray, bring it along. For more, read our guide to getting started with osteopathy.
Is osteopathic treatment painful?
Osteopathic treatment uses slow, controlled techniques and is generally not painful. Some patients notice mild tenderness or muscle soreness after their first session or two, similar to how your body might feel after a new form of exercise. This typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours and is a normal part of the body adapting to the changes made during treatment.
If anything during a session feels uncomfortable, always let your practitioner know and the approach will be adjusted immediately. We’ve written more about why you might feel worse after a session and why that can be normal.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need?
The honest answer is that it depends on what’s going on and how long it’s been there.
As a general starting point, we typically recommend four to five sessions spaced one to two weeks apart for most new presentations. Acute issues tend to respond faster than chronic patterns that have been building for months or years, not because the treatment isn’t working, but because the body has had more time to adapt around the problem.
The goal is never to keep you coming indefinitely. It’s to get you to a point where you need us as little as possible. Most patients transition to occasional maintenance visits on their own timeline once the primary issue is resolved.
Do osteopaths treat back pain, neck pain, and sciatica?
Can osteopathy help with headaches and migraines?
Many recurring headaches are driven by tension and restriction in the neck, jaw, and upper back rather than the head itself. By assessing how those areas move and carry load, we work to address what is feeding the pattern. Read more about how osteopathy approaches headaches and migraines.
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy and for children?
Osteopathy uses gentle, non-invasive techniques and can support the body through the structural changes of pregnancy and the postpartum period, including back pain, pelvic discomfort, and postural strain.
For infants and children, techniques are extremely gentle. Read more about osteopathy during pregnancy and postpartum.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see an osteopath in Ontario?
No, you do not need a referral to book an appointment at JD Osteopathy. You can book directly online at any time, no referral required.
Whether you’re dealing with a new issue or something that’s been bothering you for years, you don’t need to wait for a GP appointment first. You can book, come in, and get a full assessment on your first visit.
That said, if you do have relevant imaging, an MRI, X-ray, or specialist notes, feel free to bring them. They can provide useful context, though they’re not a requirement.
Is osteopathy covered by OHIP or insurance in Ontario?
Osteopathy is not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). It falls under extended health benefits rather than provincial coverage.
Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario do include osteopathy, often listed under “manual osteopathy” or “osteopathic manual practitioner.” Coverage limits vary by plan, some cover a set dollar amount per year, others a set number of visits.
At JD Osteopathy, we don’t offer direct billing, but after each appointment you’ll receive a detailed digital receipt with our practitioner credentials that you can submit directly to your provider. If you’re unsure whether your plan covers osteopathy, your HR department or insurance broker is the fastest way to confirm.
For a full breakdown, read our guide on whether osteopathy is covered by OHIP or insurance in Ontario.
Before your visit, it’s worth checking:
- Whether your plan covers manual osteopathy
- Your annual coverage limit or number of visits
- Whether your plan requires a physician referral for reimbursement (some do, even though we don’t require one to book)
What is the cancellation policy at JD Osteopathy?
We understand plans change. Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
Late cancellations (less than 24 hours) are subject to a cancellation fee for the full appointment amount.
To cancel or reschedule, call (647) 625-5059 or email hello@jdosteopathy.com. As long as you leave a voicemail or send an email, we will be happy to help.
Why choose JD Osteopathy over other osteopathic practitioners in Mississauga?
We specialize exclusively in manual osteopathy. Many clinics offer osteopathy alongside physiotherapy and chiropractic, but practitioners at multi-disciplinary clinics often default to their primary training. At JD Osteopathy, it’s all we do, and we do it at the highest level.
Our education standard is the highest available in Ontario. Training was completed at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy, a Type 1 school requiring 4,200+ hours of education. Many osteopaths in Ontario complete shorter programs of 1,000 to 2,000 hours. That difference matters significantly for complex and chronic cases that require deep anatomical reasoning.
